As I’m writing this, seven games involving Big Ten teams are in the fourth quarter, and they’re all ahead by enough that I can say the Big Ten will start the day 7-0.

And I can also say it’s an ugly 7-0 that doesn’t speak well for the conference.

Ohio kept things close at Ohio State into the fourth quarter. Ditto for Miami of Ohio at Michigan. The other five Big Ten teams all won by comfortable margins, but four of those games — Illinois-Eastern Illinois, Michigan State-Eastern Michigan, Iowa-Florida International, Purdue-Northern Colorado — are essentially exhibitions.

Only one early Big Ten score — Wisconsin running it up on Marshall — will look impressive in tomorrow’s paper, and even that game saw Marshall up 14-0 in the second quarter.

I don’t want to overreact to one early afternoon of football, but the Big Ten hasn’t impressed me today, even if the conference has won all seven games.
